Despite pretty much everything being precarious these days, the BlueWave team is continuing to grow! Last week we sat down with our newest teammate, Malu Kineret, and got her take on the job search in the time of COVID, her first few months on the job, and what her favorite flavor of ice cream is. Read on!
Q: So Malu, you graduated from College and began your job search in the height of COVID. Can you tell us a little bit about what that was like?
When you think about your college graduation, you typically reminisce on taking those steps across the stage, or having your family witness one of your greatest accomplishments thus far, or cherishing those final moments with college friends before you all go your separate ways. However, for the class of 2020, most of us think of graduation as a giant experience that we missed out on. After working tirelessly for 4 years to earn our degrees, we deserve a special celebration. The virtual graduations that commenced do not equate to all those missed special moments. You typically look forward to graduating and beginning your career. Little did the class of 2020 know that the job market would also look a little different this year. The “hot” job market went really cold! During quarantine I would spend hours applying for jobs and the next day they would be taken down or the company would put out a message that “due to covid they were on a hiring freeze.” It was exhausting.
On top of that, I was spending quarantine at home with my parents who looked forward everyday to asking me about the non-existent job update. After countless interviews with companies, I received offers from companies that either weren’t the right fit for me, or wouldn’t start until post-covid. Finally the light at the end of the tunnel appeared. I was on a walk around the bay here in San Diego when I received a phone call with an offer from the right fit… and of course that’s why I’m here at BlueWave!
Q: You have had other jobs in the past. How has this work experience been different? Do you think the external circumstances (COVID, the economy, political and social unrest, etc) have played a role? If so, what?
Before working at BlueWave, I worked in sales for a digital marketing agency and a financial firm. When looking at the three jobs side by side, there are few commonalities. What separates BlueWave from the other two companies is that I started off with very little knowledge of the industry. Since I am a part of the social media generation, I’ve been very exposed to marketing. On the other hand, I was an International Business major who took a lot of finance classes. I also learned to be extremely responsible financially from a young age from my father.Entering into the physical security industry was daunting to me because it was entering into the unknown. However, it has challenged me to expand my knowledge by learning something new every day.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the job?
One of my favorite things about working at BlueWave is having my hand in multiple stages of the buying process. For example, if there’s a company looking to expand their Physical Security, I would be able to walk them through every step of the way. This may be deciding what products they need, where and when they would need everything shipped and finally the ability to pack their order and ship it out myself. It has been really neat to follow the entire sales process from beginning to end.
Q: What would you change?
If I could change one thing about BlueWave, I would put a peanut butter pretzel dispenser in the office that never runs out to fulfill all of our cravings. Nothings more disheartening than going to grab some pb pretzels from the snack area and seeing a sad empty plastic container staring back at you.
Amen to this! I could survive on a strict diet of Peanut Butter Pretzels.
Q: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Why?
My all time favorite ice cream flavor would have to be the Cold Stone Signature Creation called “Mud Pie Mojo”. This delicious creation includes coffee ice cream with oreo cookies, peanut butter, roasted almonds, and fudge! My mouth is watering just thinking about it…
Me too! Jeez I am going to need a second lunch after this interview.
